Trenching & Foundation Excavation

From underground utility installation to full basement excavation, Thomasson Septic & Excavating provides precision trenching and foundation work across Central Virginia. We trench for water, electric, gas, drainage, and communication lines, and excavate foundations for basements, crawl spaces, and slab construction — including the rocky soil conditions common in our mountain-terrain service areas.

Utility Trenching

Underground utilities require trenches dug to specific depths, widths, and grades. We trench for all types of residential and commercial utility installations, working in coordination with plumbers, electricians, and utility companies to meet their exact specifications.

  • Water line trenching — from well to house or municipal connection to house, typically 24 to 36 inches deep below frost line
  • Electrical conduit trenching — from transformer or meter to house or outbuildings, typically 24 inches deep
  • Gas line trenching — from meter to house or between buildings, per utility company specifications
  • Drainage trenching — for French drains, curtain drains, and downspout discharge lines
  • Communication trenching — for internet, cable, and phone lines between structures
  • Septic pipe trenching — between house, tank, distribution box, and drain field

Foundation Excavation

Foundation excavation is some of the most precision-critical earthwork on any construction project. The excavation must match engineering drawings exactly for depth, dimensions, wall angles, and bearing surface preparation. We excavate all foundation types common in Central Virginia residential and commercial construction.

  • Full basement foundations — 8 to 10 feet below grade with precise wall angles and a level bearing surface
  • Daylight and walkout basements — stepped excavation to match sloping terrain, common on Piedmont hillsides
  • Crawl space foundations — 2 to 4 feet below grade with perimeter footing trenches
  • Slab-on-grade foundations — shallow excavation for perimeter and interior footings with graded slab base

Rocky Soil & Difficult Conditions

Properties in the Blue Ridge foothills — particularly in Greene, Madison, and Rappahannock counties — frequently encounter rock during trenching and foundation excavation. Rocky soil does not make a project impossible, but it does require experienced operators and sometimes specialized equipment. We have extensive experience working in rocky conditions and can assess the situation, adjust the approach, and keep the project moving.

Shallow bedrock may require rock breaking for foundation excavation, rerouting utility trenches to find softer ground, or adjusting foundation designs in consultation with your builder. We communicate honestly about what we encounter so you and your builder can make informed decisions.

Working with Builders & Contractors

Trenching and foundation excavation are almost always part of a larger construction project managed by a general contractor or builder. We work as a reliable subcontractor, coordinating our schedule with the overall project timeline, meeting engineering specifications precisely, and leaving the site ready for the next trade to begin work. Our reputation among builders in the region is built on showing up when scheduled, digging to spec, and keeping the project on track.

  • Scheduling coordination to fit the overall construction timeline
  • Excavation to exact engineering specifications and grade stakes
  • Clean site handoff — excess soil hauled or stockpiled as directed
  • Backfill and compaction after foundation walls are complete

Trenching & Foundation Work Across Central Virginia

We provide trenching and foundation excavation across six counties. Whether you need utility trenching in Gordonsville, foundation excavation in Remington, or basement excavation in Brandy Station, we have the equipment and experience for the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep do utility trenches need to be?

Depth varies by utility type and local code. Water lines must be below frost line — typically 24 to 36 inches in Central Virginia. Electrical conduit is usually 24 inches. Gas lines follow utility company specifications. Drainage lines vary by slope requirements. Septic pipes are typically 12 to 24 inches. We dig to the specifications provided by your utility company or contractor.

What foundation type is best for Central Virginia?

The best foundation type depends on your site conditions, budget, and needs. Full basements provide additional living or storage space and work well on sloped lots. Crawl spaces are common and cost-effective for flat to moderate terrain. Slab-on-grade foundations are the most affordable but do not suit all soil conditions. Your builder and engineer determine the best type for your specific site.

Can you trench through rocky ground?

Yes. Our equipment handles the rocky soils common in Greene, Madison, and Rappahannock county foothills. For extreme rock conditions, we can arrange rock breaking or hammer attachment work. Rocky soil trenching takes longer and may cost more than trenching in soft soils, but it is within our capabilities. We provide honest assessments of conditions and costs.

How long does foundation excavation take?

A typical residential basement excavation takes 1 to 3 days depending on size, soil conditions, and access. Crawl space and slab excavation is usually faster. Rocky soil, large foundations, and difficult site access add time. We coordinate with your builder to provide accurate scheduling and keep the project on track.

Do you handle backfill after foundation walls are built?

Yes. Once foundation walls are poured and cured to the required strength, we return to backfill around the foundation, compact the material in lifts, and grade the surface for proper drainage away from the walls. Proper backfill and compaction prevent settling, water intrusion, and foundation damage.
